The Sign Guide – Channel Letters

Look up at almost any Honolulu storefront and you'll likely spot the same thing, channel letters. A staple of business signage across Hawaii, channel letters are simple, effective, and impossible to miss. From simple block lettering to complex shapes and even full logos, they're incredibly versatile and can be customized to fit just about any brand. That's exactly why they're the first stop in our Sign Guide series, your go-to resource for navigating the world of custom signs in Honolulu.

WHAT THEY ARE

Channel letters come in two parts: the letter itself, and the face. The letter consists of an aluminum back that's cut into the letter shape, and a return (the sides of the letter) which are bent to match the contours of the back. The returns are typically mounted to the back with staples or rivets, forming the main structure of the letter. For illuminated letters, the letter also holds the LEDs and wiring.

The face is made from translucent acrylic which mounts onto the front of the letter to give it that final polished look. The most common method of attaching the face is with a flexible plastic "trim cap" which is bent to match the letter contours and glued onto the acrylic face. Trim cap comes in a variety of colors and can even be painted to match custom colors. The trim cap is then secured to the letter with screws that are painted to match for a clean finish.

For a more contemporary aesthetic, some designs opt for a "trimless" look where the acrylic face is integrated directly into the letter, resulting in a sleek, seamless appearance. Keep in mind that trimless letters can limit mounting options and may make future servicing a little more involved, something worth discussing with your sign company before committing to a design.

HOW THEY WORK

Each letter is mounted directly to the wall outside your business using a paper pattern as a template to ensure correct alignment and spacing.  For illuminated channel letters, each letter has its own wiring that is then fed through the back of the letter and into the wall. The faces are then attached to the letters to complete the installation.

Access to the back of the letters is required to complete the electrical connections and hook up to the main power.  In most cases this is accounted for in the building design, assuming the letters go in the typical sign location. In more unique circumstances, accommodations may need to be made for wiring and electrical hookup. If you’re unsure whether you have access, contact us for a site inspection and we can go over your options with you. The individual wires from each letter are brought together and connected to an LED driver that outputs the 12v DC power required for the LED modules to function. Each driver can only support a select number of LED modules, so the larger a sign is, or the more parts it has, the more LED drivers will be needed to run the sign.  The drivers are then connected to the main power.  Most signs are connected to either a timer, or a solar cell that deactivates the sign during the day and activates at night.

WHEN TO USE CHANNEL LETTERS

Channel letters are one of the most versatile options available for storefront signage. They don't require complex fabrication and can be installed in a wide variety of situations — making them a go-to choice for businesses of all shapes and sizes across Honolulu.

Channel letters are a great fit when you want:

  • High visibility day and night — Illuminated channel letters are hard to miss, whether it's midday sun or after dark. For businesses that are open in the evening, like restaurants, bars, or retail shops, this is a big advantage.

  • A clean, professional look — The dimensional quality of channel letters gives your storefront a polished, established feel that flat printed signs simply can't match.

  • Large individual letters or logos— Channel letters scale well and can be fabricated into almost any font, shape, or logo, giving you plenty of creative flexibility.

  • Durability in Hawaii's climate — Built from aluminum and acrylic, channel letters hold up well against Hawaii's heat, humidity, and salt air — making them a smart long-term investment for any Honolulu business.

Be aware however that some areas in Hawaii, like the Waikiki special district, don't allow directly illuminated signs. If you're unsure about the signage rules in your area, we're happy to help you navigate permits and find a solution that works.

CHANNEL LETTERS AT A GLANCE

Pros:

  • High visibility — Illuminated channel letters are easy to spot day and night, giving your business a presence even after the sun goes down

  • Professional appearance— The three-dimensional look gives your storefront a polished, established feel that flat signs can't replicate

  • Fully customizable — Available in virtually any font, color, shape, or logo design to match your brand perfectly

  • Durable — Built from aluminum and acrylic, they're designed to withstand Hawaii's heat, humidity, and salt air for years

  • Versatile — Works on almost any storefront, wall surface, or building type

  • Great for branding — Individual letters make a strong visual statement that reinforces your brand identity

Cons:

  • Higher upfront cost — Channel letters require more fabrication than simpler sign options, so the initial investment is greater.

  • Electrical requirements — Illuminated letters need wiring and power access, which can add complexity and cost depending on your building setup

  • Permit requirements — Like most exterior signage in Honolulu, channel letters typically require permits before installation

  • Not allowed everywhere — Certain areas like the Waikiki special district restrict directly illuminated signs, so always check local regulations first

  • Maintenance — LEDs and drivers are long lasting but may eventually need replacing.
